Reading Course for Non-Native English Readers

Every year, the BSC offers a session of the Harvard Course in Reading and Study Strategies tailored to students for whom English is not a native language.

Course Topics

This is not an ESL course, i.e., a course in how to read English. It is a course in how to approach reading American expository texts at an advanced level (i.e., at an undergraduate, graduate, or professional level). Proficiency in English is required.

The course covers a broad range of topics, including the following:

  • reading with your eyes and your mind
  • reading with a question
  • understanding the structure of expository text
  • overviewing
  • summarizing
  • anticipating and intuiting
  • remembering what you read
  • navigating longer texts
  • close reading
  • reading with authority
