Every year, the BSC offers a session of the Harvard Course in Reading and Study Strategies tailored to students for whom English is not a native language.
This is not an ESL course, i.e., a course in how to read English. It is a course in how to approach reading American expository texts at an advanced level (i.e., at an undergraduate, graduate, or professional level). Proficiency in English is required.
The course covers a broad range of topics, including the following:
- reading with your eyes and your mind
- reading with a question
- understanding the structure of expository text
- anticipating and intuiting
- remembering what you read
- navigating longer texts
- close reading
- reading with authority
